Opel has one of the longest traditions of any automobile manufacturer in the world and is one of the biggest European car manufacturers. Adam Opel founded the company in Rüsselsheim am Main in 1862. The company started building automobiles in 1899. Opel has been part of Groupe PSA since August 2017. As part of the global Groupe PSA production and R&D network, Opel runs ten plants in six European countries along with a development center. Opel and its British sister brand Vauxhall are represented in more than 60 countries around the globe. Opel/Vauxhall sold over one million vehicles in 2018.
Opel is currently in the middle of implementing the PACE! strategic plan with the goal of making the company sustainably profitable, global and electric. Furthermore, Opel is continuing its extensive product offensive: The company will launch eight all-new or refreshed models by 2020 and is thus renewing its product portfolio to meet the ambitious emissions requirements and create a sustainably successful future.
Opel’s brand credo is “The future is Everyone’s”. It emphasises the ambitions to democratise technologies and thus make them available for everyone. This approach is ingrained in the history of the company.
Opel is taking a proactive approach to the profound changes the entire automotive industry is facing. The megatrends driving this change are electric cars, connected and autonomous vehicles along with alternative concepts for individual mobility such as car or ridesharing.
Hardly any other car manufacturer, for example, has such a consistent electrification strategy as Opel and by 2024 all European passenger car models will offer an electric variant – either as pure battery electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids – in addition to the highly efficient combustion engine. Opel/Vauxhall will have four new electrified models on the market in 2020 already, those being the Grandland X plug-in hybrid, a battery electric variant of the new generation Corsa along with electrified versions of the successor of the successful Mokka X compact SUV and the Vivaro van.
